Getting Ready for College! (針對國際學校或是美國高中生如何準備申請美國大學！)

College preparation is engrained in the essence of education – the ability to learn, the desire to explore, the persistence to grow, the determination to focus, and the motivation to apply. Each of these fundamentals symbolizes a stepping-stone on the college timeline, and it’s important to understand what takes place at each point:

如何準備申請大學！絕對不是高中最後一年的功課，12年級才開始準備肯定會讓你措手不及，失去許多機會，只要及早規劃，進入夢想美國大學沒有想像中的那麼難哦！

Middle School

Middle School is about  learning. It’s about absorbing knowledge and enriching your mind both academically and socially – all while developing skills and study habits that will prepare you for high school, college and beyond.

9th Grade （Freshmen 9年級）

9th grade is about meeting your counselor and  exploring  new found opportunities available to you. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself or try something new. Your exploration will prepare you for college in ways you cannot imagine.

如果你現在是國際學校9年級的學生（Freshmen），或是一般中學國三生，千萬別嫌早！有申請美國大學打算的同學，9年級就要開始規劃！

  1. 9年級是最好的探索時期，不要害怕嘗試新的領域，也不要自我設限 想學什麼知識或技能就去學，想參加什麼活動就去參加，新的事物一點也不可怕 ！找到自己的興趣，將來想唸什麼？是一般學術科系或藝術設計科系？依據不同的目標，擬出接下來四年的計畫，若不知從何著手，可尋求諮商協助，一般國際學校都設有 College Admission and Counselling Office，各大學也會有詳細的科系介紹及申請要求，善用網路資源，當然也可以尋求專業留學考試機構協助。
  2. 維持好的在校成績GPA，頂尖美國大學非常看重在校成績和排名，不要輕忽此點！
  3. 培養好的閱讀習慣！多讀原文小說或文學作品，不知不覺中就能累積單字量，並提升閱讀速度，閱讀能力是無法一日建造的，需要長期累積！

10th Grade （Sophomore 10年級）

By 10th grade, your strengths are getting ready to blossom – but it’s up to you to sustain your growth by developing new skills and maintaining involvement in activities.

10年級（Sophomore）可以開始設定多所目標大學，並開始收集資料，多了解各大學的申請要求，善用網路資源，各大學的網站都有詳細的科系申請介紹 （Admission office），有機會也可以到各大校園走走看看！

  1. 一樣維持良好在校成績和排名，國際學校的學生可以選修Mid­level Classes， 並多參加課外活動，利用課後或寒暑假參加國內外各種活動，校內社團、校外營隊、志工、實習、打工、社區服務等，美國大學是非常在乎學生的生活及社會經驗的！
  2. 持續好的閱讀習慣！閱讀college level的原文小說書籍或報章雜誌， The New Yorker (紐約客), The New York Times (紐約時代), The Washington Post (華盛頓郵報), The Economist (經濟學人), Bloomberg (彭博商業周刊), Psychology Today (今日心理學), Popular Science (科技新時代), Time Magazine (時代雜誌), CNN, NPR (全國公共廣播電台)等，選自己感興趣的來讀，這會對將來的 SAT 考試特別是閱讀（Reading）和寫作（Writing）很有幫助！

11th Grade （Junior 11年級）

The defining characteristic of 11th grade is  focus – focus on your grades, focus on your entrance exams, focus on your college search, and of course…focus on yourself : the activities you enjoy and the interests you want to pursue.

  1. 注重學業！國際學校的學生可以嘗試選修一些Honors and College-level classes (AP / IB program)，證明自己的能力。
  2. 開始準備各種入學考試，包括 TOEFL、SAT、ACT、SAT Subject Tests 並在11年級下學期參加考試  
  3. 專注興趣，經過幾年的探索學習並參與各種活動之後，選出一、二樣最喜歡的，並且專注學習，讓興趣成為專長 。
  4. 想在 SAT 拿高分，絕對不能停止閱讀，閱讀可以累積單字量，並提升閱讀速度，到了大學你更是必須應付大量的原文學術閱讀，良好的英文閱讀能力絕對可以幫助你的學習，別忘了閱讀能力是需要長期累積培養的！  

12th Grade （Senior 12年級）

12th grade is known as the year of applying to college, but it’s so much more than that. It’s also the year of applying your knowledge and interests to solidify your future. Sure, the emphasis is placed on submitting forms to a variety of schools – but what you’re really doing is showcasing all that you’ve accomplished and all that makes you,  you. In addition, challenge yourself with honors or college-level courses, talk with your school counselor, a teacher or the school principal. He or she can help you get information about a course’s workload, any preparation you might need and the way to sign up for this type of class. Take some college courses, IB classes and exams, and AP Exams may lead to college credit and advanced placement in college. Of course, positive influence for your college application.

  1. 入學考試和申請大學，12年級生（Seniors）需於該學年度12月中(before the 2nd week of December)前，完成所有入學考試，12年級上學期最重要的活動便是申請大學(College Application)，內容包括基本資料、在校成績、考試成績、課外活動、自傳、寫作、推薦信等！
  2. 維持成績！儘管申請大學時不需要提交12年級的成績，但不少美國大學仍會在確定錄取後，要求學生提交12年級的成績 千萬別因錄取而鬆懈過頭，讓在校成績一落千丈！
  3. 國際學校的學生請繼續選修進階課程：Honors and College-level classes (AP / IB program)，有些可以用來抵掉大學部分課程學分，各個學校的規定及可以抵扣的學分則各有不同，基本上來說AP / IB 對申請大學也會有正面的幫助。

Read! Read! Read! （好吧！我很囉唆！） 就算考完試也要保持好的閱讀習慣，時時充實自我，孩子們！閱讀是一輩子的事！

Remember:  Preparing for college is not a sprint. The years leading up to college should not be rushed to prevent falling behind because there is no such thing as finishing last. Everyone advances towards college at his or her own pace, and ultimately all that matters is the thoughtfulness of your process  – not the speed at which you complete it.

記得要提早準備！有問題就尋求協助，跟爸媽商量，詢問學校老師或Counselor，只要及早規劃，按部就班，一定可以順利進入理想的美國大學！
